Which airport should we fly into?
Map Key:
A - Denver International Airport
B - Breckenridge
C- Colorado Springs Airport
D- Eagle/Vail Airport
When making your Breckenridge travel plans, the easiest airports to travel through are Denver, Colorado Springs and Eagle/Vail.
Here is a breakdown of the different airports, their distance from Breckenridge and their pros and cons.
A - Denver
(Airport Code DEN):
1 hour and 45 minute drive.
Denver is typically the least expensive airport to travel through. It is large, spacious, clean and easy to navigate.
Once you arrive in Denver you then need to get to the mountains. You may either use a resort shuttle service or rent a car. Resort shuttle services run once or twice per hour and can cost anywhere from $40 - $80 per person. Shuttle prices depend on seasonality and distance of drop off. For more information please visit www.coloradomountainexpress.com or www.summitexpress.com. Many of our properties are within walking distance to both skiing and town, so many guests do not need a car once they arrive in Breckenridge!
If you choose to rent a car, please be aware that it will take take 30 to 45 minutes to get from the gate to the rental car terminal. Rental cars offer a lot of freedom for our guests! However, please remember that when renting a car you will be driving in a high alpine environment with lots of snow and ice. Renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle may cost more than an economy rental.
If you wish to stay in Denver for the night (which we highly recommend), many airports near DIA offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport. When you arrive you may take a free shuttle to your hotel where you can get a good nights sleep and let your body acclimate to the first leg of your high altitude vacation. In the morning the airport shuttle will bring you back to DIA where you can pick up your resort shuttle or rental car to get to the mountains.
Once you depart the airport, the journey to the mountains will take you along Interstate 70 (I-70). This is a highly traveled road, and there may be a lot of traffic. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) closely monitors traffic and road conditions, so please plan accordingly. We recommend checking the CDOT website: www.coloradodot.info before you depart Breckenridge for the airport to ensure you leave enough time for your return journey.
C - Colorado Springs
(Airport code COS)
2 hour and 30 minute drive.
Colorado Springs is a much smaller airport than DIA, so flights may be more expensive. However, rental car pick up is a breeze and the drive to Breckenridge is very scenic. There are no resort shuttles available from Colorado Springs to Summit County, so if you choose to fly into COS make sure you have a rental car reservation. Once you retrieve your rental car there are many reasonably priced hotels and resorts where you can spend your first night in Colorado. Once you begin your journey to Summit County remember to drive SLOW through Fairplay and Alma! Fairplay and Alma have police cars solely devoted to giving speeding tickets and the speed limits are very low! Just before arriving in Summit County you will drive over Hoosier Pass, a two lane mountain pass that crosses the continental divide. Hoosier Pass is a beautiful drive and a great photo op, however it can be treterous in snowy weather so be careful!
D - Eagle/Vail
(Airport Code EGE)
45 minute drive.
Eagle/Vail is the smallest airport option but it is also the closest! Travelers will typically have to change planes at another Colorado airport and flights will be more expensive. This airport is ideal for vacationers who do not want to drive a long distance from the airport to Breckenridge. The drive from Eagle/Vail is only 45 minutes! Make sure to research rental car options before booking flights into Eagle/Vail!
